Import comments and markers into Webgate.io

In film production, a seamless workflow is of the utmost importance. Comments and markers are essential tools that enhance communication and ensure consistency across different applications. They enable directors, producers, editors, and actors to leave notes, feedback, and suggestions at specific timecodes or scenes. This open communication fosters collaboration and ensures that the creative vision is shared and understood by the entire team.

Webgate.io, as a central communication platform, not only allows comments and markers to be left. It is possible to draw directly into the images and videos, comments can be marked as done and filtered. And now new: Markers that were created at an earlier time can be seamlessly imported into Webgate.io. Likewise the collected markers can be exported. Webgate.io can thus contribute to an improvement of the workflow across different applications.

Our new import function allows you to upload Final Cut Pro XML, Premiere CSV, Avid XML and CSV as well as Davinci Resolve EDL files. Webgate.io automatically detects the uploaded file format and imports the comments and markers from the provided file. Once imported, the Webgate.io comment functions can also be applied to the imported comments and markers. This means that they can be marked as done, filtered and replied to, for example. Also in the comment export the so enriched information can be downloaded for further processing and can be passed on.

Given that markers and comments typically contain information about a single frame or a specific time range, rather than the entire video file, the timecode of the import file has to match that of the videos in Webgate.io.

New metadata integration between Webgate.io and LockitScript

After no less than 32 years, the second part of Manta Manta will be released in German cinemas on March 30. Not only the actors have aged three decades, but also the film technology has developed significantly. While the first part was shot in analog, the second part was recorded with an Alexa Mini as the main camera, and the workflow for the second part is also completely digital.

Some script supervisors still work analog, but for "Manta Manta Zwoter Teil" the script supervisor app LockitScript was used together with the Lockit Webtools. The big advantage here is that all the comments and metadata from the Script Supervisor go digitally into the editing room and into the Webgate dailies platform, and there is no digital break using paper.

Even though the workflow using LockitScript was digital before, the post-production metadata had to be manually enriched with LockitScript metadata. Afterwards, the new metadata was uploaded manually to Webgate, thus enriching the dailies with metadata. This detour is now completely eliminated! All existing metadata can now be transferred from LockitScript to Webgate at the push of a button.

During the production "Manta Manta Zwoter Teil" the connection was discovered rather by chance by DIT Ronny Langer and he was so enthusiastic about it that he worked with it until the end of shooting. We were thus able to prove on a living object that a few clicks are enough to automatically transfer all metadata from LockitScript to Webgate. This saves time and prevents errors.

The new integration between Webgate.io and LockitScript is an innovative solution, made for the smooth delivery of dailies. DITs can save valuable time and focus on creative work while the metadata is automatically and correctly transferred to Webgate.io. Want to learn more about the workflow at "Manta Manta Zwoter Teil", you can read a Case Study at Lockit or see how exactly the connection between the two tools works.

Introducing Timecode Input: A Faster Way to Navigate Videos

Have you ever been in the middle of a long video and had trouble using fast forward, rewind, or frame by frame navigation to jump to a specific scene based on a timecode?

Well, we have some good news for you: our latest video player feature now allows you to enter a timecode via keyboard, and the player will automatically jump to the exact frame you need.

When you visit a Webgate.io playlist you can simply enter a timecode by pressing your number keys on your keyboard. The playhead instantly jumps to the exact moment you need, without having to click multiple times or scrub through the video. A timecode is represented as hours, minutes, seconds, and frames separated by a colon. If you want to jump to a timecode you just need to enter the numbers without colon. By entering 01230912 the playhead jumps to 01:23:09:12. You do not need to enter a complete timecode. By entering 0123 and press enter, you will navigate to 01:23:00:00. When start typing a simple timecode interface shows up to make it more easy to type. You can also correct your input by pressing backspace or abort by hitting ESC.

In addition to its benefits for video navigation, timecode input can also be a game-changer for video approvals and reviews. When reviewing a video with multiple stakeholders, it can be challenging to communicate exactly which moment in the video you are referring to. By using timecode input, you can quickly and easily jump to the exact frame you want to discuss, making the review process smoother and more efficient.

A filter allows you to hide comments that are marked as done and helps you to focus on the comments that are most relevant and require your attention.

You already know the possibility to label or tag your content when using Webgate.io as your online file and video storage. To improve overall efficiency and accessibility we now added labels also to comments. Securing Your Directlinks: The New Password Strength Feature in Webgate.io

As filmmakers, it's essential to protect the sensitive content we work with. That's why we're excited to announce a new feature in Webgate.io, the video collaboration platform: the ability to see the strength of the password you create when you create a Directlink with password. Not only that, but you can also copy the password to your clipboard.

In today's digital age, it's more important than ever to make sure our passwords are secure. Unfortunately, many people still use weak passwords that are easy to guess or crack. With Webgate.io's new password strength feature, creating a strong password is easy.

When you create a Directlink with password in Webgate.io, you'll be prompted to set a password. As you type, the password strength indicator will show you the strength of your password in real-time. The indicator uses five bars, so you can easily see if your password is weak, fair, good, or strong.

Not only does this feature help you create a stronger password, but it also makes it more convenient to share it with others. After you've set your password, you can simply click the "copy to clipboard" button to save it to your clipboard. This means you can easily share the password with others without having to type it out or worry about mistyping it.

In conclusion, the new password strength feature in Webgate.io is a great way to protect your sensitive content and keep it safe. We hope you take advantage of this new feature and encourage you to use strong and secure passwords for your Directlinks with password.

To make content even more safe, you can also render visual watermarks into the video or use the Directlinks with one-time password. If you want to learn more about sharing content please visit our Directlinks page.

Simplifying role-based access management for sensitive image and video assets

Streaming dailies, deliver source files to the VFX department or presenting a full feature film to the press are just a few steps in your video production workflow. In all these steps a lot of different people are involved. And we know, human errors are the cause of most data breaches.

To limit the risk of a breach by a human mistake we developed a role-based access control system. Furthermore you have full control of these roles and can change each role or create custom roles. In addition your project can be sectioned into rooms. Each room has its own roles. So the same user in one room could have totally different permissions than in other rooms. Thus you can give a person precisely the rights he or she needs to cooperate.

This customizable role system is nothing new for Webgate.io. But what is really new is the improved interface to manage these roles and permissions. We make it more accessible to role managers. So from now on you find the role and permission interface in the context menu of each project and room. The right handed role-sidebar when browsing your online workspace shows you your role in the selected room. As a role manager you have also access to the selected room or project roles. Learn more about our Access control interface and system.

Besides the access control features through roles and rights, Webgate.io provides further means to secure your content: The room settings enable you to allow only certain types of data. For example, in a «Dailies» room for video feedback you could restrict the upload to playlists only. You can grant access to low resolution derivatives only or protect your videos with individual watermarks. Requiring two factor authentication from your employees is a great way to to ensure secure accounts. And even sharing videos with externals can be done securely.

Introducing our new accelerated upload interface

Webgate.io is the tool for video feedback and distribution of video data. Webgate has always been able to score with uploads of large amounts of data such as DCPs. However, the previous browser uploader had its limitations especially when uploading a lot of small files. We have now fixed this trade off and reworked the interface of the browser uploader and accelerated it significantly.

Instant start of your upload, increased speed, new design and improved performance when handling uploads with deep folder structures and many files.

Optimized for uploading large files, we used to upload a file parallel in multiple «chunks». Our update now allows you to upload chunks and files to all Webgate.io servers at the same time. This optimally utilizes your available bandwidth and significantly speeds up the upload.

Especially in the sound department often a lot of files with deeply nested folder structures are distributed. These folder structures were already considered in the old uploader and folder levels were taken over one to one. This step has now been further optimized and the addition of entire folders with many files and layers has been greatly accelerated. The entire interface also benefits from this improvement. Uploads are no longer processed sequentially, but sent to our servers in parallel. Pausing, resuming and canceling uploads is also much more responsive.

The new design uses a color scheme and icons to show you at a glance which file types are involved. You will see the file size of each file as well as the speed at which a file is uploaded. Of course we also show you the total progress and the summed up speed of your uploads.

The topic of upload and download in Webgate.io is not finished yet and we will release more improvements for the data exchange in the next months. As always we are looking forward to your feedback.

Enforce two-factor authentication for all users

Webgate.io, built for the professional film industry, is a safe place for your high value video assets. To protect your film productions in the best possible way, we have a new feature for you that forces your team members to protect their account better.

Organization and Project owners can enforce members to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for their personal accounts.

2FA is an access management security method that requires an additional identification after login with user name and password. Learn more in our recent blog post about two-factor authentication.

Users in Webgate.io can already activate 2FA optionally. To enforce 2FA in your project, click the context menu (three dots) of your project and choose «Project settings». Then check «Require two-factor authentication» and save. You find your projects in the Dashboard as well as in the Webgate.io Browser tree. Please make sure you have already activated 2FA in your account settings.

To enforce 2FA for all your projects organization wide, click the context menu of your organization and choose «Client settings». You find your organization for example in the Webgate.io Browser in the upper left corner.

Once you require 2FA users can still see your projects but can't access them. If they try to access a project they will be asked to set up a second factor. After setting up 2FA users can access your data and start collaboration and give feedback. We recommend notifying organization and project members before requiring 2FA and ask them to set up 2FA for their accounts.

Webgate.io Downloader on Windows

A few weeks ago we released the Webgate.io Downloader for Mac. It allows you to securely download large amounts of data at high speeds.

Today we released the port of Webgate.io Downloader for Windows desktop devices.

Even though most filmmakers work with Apple devices, we know that especially users who work in the digital cinema sector use Windows devices. On-time delivery of a DCP to a cinema for pre-screening, approval or press screening is essential here. A DCP or Digital Cinema Package is the standard playback format for films in digital cinema. Picture and sound of a DCP meet the highest quality standards. As a result, DCPs can quickly exceed 100 GB in size, and secure and fast data exchange is of great importance. This is where the new Webgate.io Downloader for Windows comes into play. With just a few clicks the downloader can be installed even without admin rights and offers the possibility of a fast and reliable download.
